In 1933, an automobile division was set up in Aichi Steel Co., Ltd.'s Kariya plant, and the following year in 1934 a prototype plant was established that was comprised of facilities including a sheet metal/assembly factory and materials testing center.
The building, which can be toured, has been restored as a site where Toyota cars were first developed.
We hope to honor our predecessors who embarked on the challenge of making cars from scratch with the aim of "making cars on our own hands and establishing the Japanese automotive industry."

The prototype plant at the
establishment of Toyota
On September 1, 1933, the Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. established the automobile division in Kariya. It was exactly ten years after the Great Kanto Earthquake had struck. In 1934, a prototype plant—which comprised a sheet metal and assembly plant, a machine and finishing plant, warehouses, and a materials testing and research center—was established on this site.
